Adirondacks, NY.
This is a difficult place to simply drive by. When the morning sun clears the valley between Rocky Ridge and Round Pond to light these cliffs, there are few nicer sights in any season here. Before dawn, Chapel Pond is usually glass. On the little strip where birches grow between the boulder and debris, color had matured selectively and wavered slightly in reflection. I can imagine that whoever named this place once stood where I stand, on the same vestibular cove, looking across the nave of water to that palette, an altar beneath a vault of rock towering above it, and felt religion.
