Rainbow Falls, Adirondacks, NY.
As the Weld Trail reaches it's first plateau it is parallelled by a stream eminating from somewhere above, in the deep recesses under Pinnacle and Gothics. On the mountain, the water tumbles and splashes through a shallow bed, to emerge and shoot 150 feet down a cliff face, where it creates a veil before it hits the plunge pool and the jumble of boulders and other detritus, fallen into the three-sided canyon over time. Winds circulate strangely in this box, drifting the mist of pulverized water unpredictably, creating a garden thick with mosses and ferns on the cool, north facing walls. Arguably sacred, the pilgrim reaches it by following the stream from it's confluence with the start of the East Branch of the Ausable River, as it, in turn, falls out of Lower Ausable Lake.
