Ahead

Hoover Wilderness, California. Flanked by Buckeye Ridge and Sawteeth Ridge, I hiked forward towards a map point. Hunawill Peak and Cirque Mountain towered 11,000 feet up, drawing me towards the lake cradled below them. Fit and strong from a week of hiking, my head was clear. Looking back at a sequence of routes and images, the days were filled with hope and confidence, goals and success. I carried a pack and a camera into the silver brightness of granite peaks, and no other baggage. Would that our journey through life were as simple. I wish I could say, with the certainty I knew that day, what lies ahead.
