Gill Brook, Adirondack Mountain Reserve, NY
The bad weather finally moved out, but rain water still percolated out of the oversoaked mountains. Gill Brook had been suffering through a dry autumn with meager flows. Though not my primary destination, I always walk the alternate trail that follows this flow. The sun was just starting to clear the mountains east, and light poured through the trees with a special quality to it, a brightness that only comes after a storm has cleansed the air. This one must have raged a bit, judginhg from the downed leaves that littered the still wet bedrock that contains the brook. I could feel the energy downstream of the waterfall, the pool recharged with fresh volume, and myself, physically, with the lift that a front of high pressure brings. Finding the right composition, I felt like I woke up from the thoughtless trudge that got me here...brain function began, the human and the elements were refreshed.
