The slightest little bit of mist rose along the strata in pools where the water tumbled, cooler than this warm and rainy October morning. I try to hit this gorge early when I go, primarily to avoid other visitors, but also to shoot before sunlight can penetrate the canyon walls. No problem on this day, the rains and winds overnight had stripped a lot of leaves off the trees. But that worked to my advantage in the color that now decorated the layers of shale, sculpted and scoured by eons of erosion. There are 19 waterfalls in Watkins Glen, but there are countless little cascades, runs, riffles, and steps like these that are all dressed up, waiting to be noticed.
