Finger Lakes, NY.
Heavy skies were creeping eastward while I waited for sunrise, perched over a small vineyard on the west side of Keuka Lake. With a forecast not conducive to grander landscapes, I plotted a course to running water, and headed off across the rolling mountains typifying the Finger Lake region. But nice light was not done showing off yet, and as I came out of the forest on Heron Hill, on fire with autumn color, the sky was opening up on the eastern horizon to let the climbing sun peek across the landscape. Usually these phenomena are observed, with me uttering obscenities that there is no suitable thing to shoot. But this time I got lucky, popping over a rise that a small farm populated, with a field of last-of-the-season rolled bales stretching out to Heron Hill, all bathed in beautiful concentrated light. Anyone watching from the farm saw an idiot stop, pull to the side, jump out and run to a vantage point, fumbling wildly with camera and tripod. Such are fleeting moments. For wine lovers or anyone else interested, that's Heron Hill Wineries mid-way up the hill.
