Schroon River, Adirondacks, NY.
This river has always been a favorite of mine. It begins quite some distance north of here and is impounded in Schroon Lake before continuing it's journey to meet the Hudson down around Thurman. I fished it for many years before photographing it, and it is for much of the year, a big and dangerous river that gives up nice trout. Back in the day I even caught landlocked salmon in here. The bottom is strewn with slick boulders ranging from the size of a football to a riding lawnmower, and you can go from knee deep to neck deep in a step. It is intense wading. It makes for some challenging photography as well. Summer drought allowed me to rock hop out quite a ways a bit above a river bend, where I could get out for a vantage point not usually there, into the rapids. The sky had been more solid and not not very promising on this morning. But as the sun rose, it began to break up-- a nice counter to the river, itself breaking into white water a short ways above me, and the fingers of mist giving it up as the air warmed.
