Lake George, Adirondacks, NY.
The hike up here was slog. The lower part of the trail from Hogtown Road was a pleasant snowshoe on a couple of inches of new snow, but the trail disappeared beneath several inches as the elevation rose, and I found myself breaking the path and feeling the effects of my exertion, and the too many days since my last outing. This was not the more popular route up, and I was apparently the first person through, from this end, in a while. Nevertheless, as always, when I neared the top it was all forgotten and I turned my attentions to the vista. The wind had already scoured the summit and stripped the pines. Below, the lake was almost frozen but for a couple of patches of open water. Gore Mountain and her ski trails shimmered on the far horizon.
