Cholla Cactus, Joshua Tree National Park, California. There's no order, no neat rows, in this garden, and the irrigation is pretty much from this shallow, rock strewn stream bed that I'm standing in. It probably has not carried water in quite a few months. But when it does, it's enough to nourish all these Cholla Cactus, more commonly called Teddy Bear cactus because they resemble the fuzzy limbs of our favorite cuddly toy. Don't go mistaking these for something to hug though--these are the devil's playthings. Today, the light played through in the morning, and danced on the flower buds adorning hundreds of Teddy Bear arms, just waiting for someone to say "Aww, how cute".
