Leaving the forest trail when it neared a curve in Marcy Brook, I waded into the relative openess of the stream corridor. A coincidence of intersecting actions: I have stepped randomly out of the woods; a tree, splayed across the streambed, has fallen out of the woods for a connecting line. And an unexpected view to a flank of Wright Mountain, tossing off snow clouds, rises out of the woods on the far horizon, providing depth.
The ridges of small boulders are deposits from Hurricane Irene, when the brook raged against and over its banks, and carried untold quantities of silt and rock down its course.
