I should have gone up this route when I climbed Sawteeth, one of the peaks in the Great Range. But instead I took the Scenic trail down, and I found it a steep and difficult trail to descend. And it was hot. And there was no breeze in the forest on the east side of the wall. Relief when I hit the lake shore was short-lived, as the trail continued in the woods instead of the shore, over boulders and roots requiring vigilance every step--slow progress lest you plunge a foot down a hole between them. Finally hitting a small side trail to the lake, I got out in the open and breathed air movement, and soaked my dogs a minute. And looking across the lake, saw why the trip down was worth it: Indian Head and the Fish Hawk Cliffs basked in late afternoon light, early lime greens and yellows of autumn shimmering on the water surface while a couple of maples reddened on the slopes. My feet would have been happier, but morning wouldn't have done at all in this little cove.
